My First Handmade Gold Jewelry
I really wish I had more pictures of this but it’s actually rather funny how it all worked out. One day at work, the weather was horrible with a lot of snow and wind in the forecast. We knew it was going to be a slow day at work and for whatever reason, I was really motivated to make something from scratch. Since I had started there, I always had my eye on a 6 carat ruby cabochon my boss had laying around and I decided that today was the day it became mounted. I started by melting down some gold scrap we had laying around and rolled it into about a foot of square wire. This became the skeleton for the stones to sit on. I then took a men’s wedding band, cut it in half longways, and rolled it thin to make the bezel wire for the ruby. It all came together really smoothly and the quarter carat of diamonds at the top added some much needed sparkle. I was really excited that I was able to make something that came out so close to my original sketch. On that cold winter day, a client we affectionately call “garnet girl” came in with her elderly mother. When she comes in we like top chat and I often show whatever project I’m working on. Her mother became entranced with that ruby necklace and bought it before it was even dry from the final cleaning. It was so nice to have someone fall in love with something I made from the first glance. they even asked if they could have the original sketch!
