Restoration of a Vintage Opal Ring
One of my favorite projects I worked on was restoring this vintage opal and diamond ring. When I received this ring, the opal was very heavily scratched and was in desperate need of a repolish. The stone was also glued into the mounting which got glue all over the diamonds. Over time, the glue had started to turn brown making the white diamonds look rather ugly. I was really nervous when I removed the opal because I saw that the stone had chipped in the back and was stuck in the glue. I wasn’t sure if the combination of the chips and repolishing would allow me to set the stone back into the ring properly. I was able to scrape out all the glue out of the ring mounting and give it a thorough cleaning while I repolished the opal. This revealed that there were old mine cut diamonds in the halo which showed the age of this ring. It all came back together very smoothly and I knew that a certain client would be interested in it and would give it the home it deserved. When they saw it, they knew they couldn’t leave it behind and I was so glad that the ring found a good home.
